The rule for UK players
For individuals, gambling winnings are not income and not a capital gain. That applies to online casino games, sports bets, bingo, poker and lottery prizes alike. There is nothing to report on a self-assessment return and nothing for the operator to deduct before it pays you.
This is set out in HMRC's own guidance. If you want to read it at source, search GOV.UK for how gambling winnings are treated for tax, or see the income tax pages on GOV.UK.
Who pays tax on gambling instead
The operators do. Gambling businesses pay duties to HMRC on their own profits, such as Remote Gaming Duty on online casino games and separate duties on betting. The government sets the rates and publishes the current figures on GOV.UK.
Because the duty falls on the operator's profit rather than on your stake or your win, nothing is taken from a payout on its way to you. The amount you withdraw is the amount you keep.
Where tax can still reach your winnings
- Interest and returns. Put winnings in a savings account and the interest is taxable in the usual way, subject to your personal savings allowance.
- Inheritance. Winnings become part of your estate like any other money.
- Professional gambling. In rare cases where gambling forms part of a trade, such as running a betting business, different rules can apply. Ordinary players, including frequent ones, are not affected.
Tax-free is not the same as profitable
Not paying tax on winnings does not change the odds. Casino games carry a built-in house edge, and over time players as a whole lose more than they win. Winnings are best treated as a bonus to entertainment you have already budgeted for, never as a way to make up a shortfall. If gambling is affecting your finances, our safer gambling page lists free, confidential help, and for how bonus terms affect what you can withdraw, see the wagering guide.
Questions UK readers ask
Do I pay tax on casino winnings in the UK?
No. Individuals in the UK do not pay income tax or capital gains tax on gambling winnings, whether from an online casino, a sportsbook, bingo or the lottery. You do not need to declare them to HMRC.
Do I pay tax on betting winnings?
No. Sports betting winnings are treated the same way as casino winnings for UK players: tax-free. The operator pays betting duty on its own profits instead.
Can gambling winnings affect other tax?
Winnings themselves are not taxed, but what you do with them can be. Interest earned on winnings held in savings, or income from investments bought with them, is taxed in the normal way.
Can I claim gambling losses against tax?
No. Because winnings are not taxable, losses cannot be set against other income either.
